DILLSBURG — Mechanicsburg spent 10 minutes practicing the victory formation on Thursday, senior Dylan Smith said, and the Wildcats got to use it.

In a heart-pounding, nerve-wracking, come-from-behind win, Mechanicsburg edged Northern 33-30 on a 43-yard touchdown pass with 1:02 to play to move to 2-1 and get back above .500 for the first time in this generation of players’ careers.

“It’s the time of our life,” Smith said.

“This is a huge improvement from last year,” said Will Hoover, who had the game-sealing interception inside a minute to play.

If the Wildcats didn't quite know how to celebrate a win last week, they certainly did this time around. Hoover's interception, an excellent bobbling grab over the top of the intended receiver, started it off even though the clock still had more than 30 ticks left. Mechanicsburg buzzed and bounced on the sidelines, then exploded for joy as the scoreboard showed all zeros in front of a marching band and well-traveled fan section to the school's fight song.

No one would have blamed Takeno Scales had he taken it a little easy this season.
Overexertion could have caused big problems for the Mechanicsburg senior. And no, that’s just not something Scales told his coach in order to get out of some wind sprints during two-a-days.

Lack of consistency kills Wildcats' season

Mechanicsburg’s 2014 campaign was a perfect illustration of the rough-and-tumble nature of the Mid-Penn Keystone Division.
The Wildcats had dynamic playmakers. They had experienced starters returning on both sides of the ball. They stayed closer with District 3-AAA kingpin Bishop McDevitt than any other team in the classification could.

Throughout the 2013 season, it seemed the Mechanicsburg Wildcats were either battling injuries or their own mindset.

Early in the season, star quarterback Tyler Schubert and running back Shyheim Brown suffered injuries which sidelined them for multiple games.

Student of the game

Tyler-Schubert

Mechanicsburg head coach Chris Hakel knew he had something different in Tyler Schubert when the quarterback was a freshman.

When his young quarterback would show up for meetings and film review sessions, Schubert was always armed with a notebook and pencil in order to take notes on what was being instructed. It was a habit that began to wear off, as other players began arriving ready to write down information as well.
