Newport faithful rewarded one of their own this week following the program’s first District 3 Class 2A title.

Ethan Rode picked up 40.1 percent of the vote to earn his first 4th Down Magazine Player of the Week award for Week 12. The sophomore back for the 10-1 Buffaloes scored three times in a 26-7 win over York Catholic, carrying the squad into the PIAA Class 1A first round against Dunmore in the process.

Rode was a workhorse, toting the rock 36 times for 197 yards in the win. He also hauled in a 20-yard pass. The 5-foot-10, 185-pound back scored in the first quarter on a 9-yard burst, then added a pair of fourth quarter goal-line plunges to put the game out of reach.

He has been a steady presence all year in the backfield for the Buffaloes, but he was injured during the game. Newport’s PIAA opener comes against unbeaten Dunmore at Susquehanna Twp. this weekend.

Still, Rode nearly doubled the next closest competitor in our polls.
